Title Of Album: We Live Here
Year Of Release: 1995
Label: Nonesuch Records
Genre: Jazz Instrument, Guitar
Format: MP3
Quality: 320 kbps I 44.1 Khz I Joint Stereo
Total Time: 67 min
Total Size: 153 mb
Pat Metheny Group: Pat Metheny (guitar, guitar synthesizer); David Blamires (vocals); Mark Ledford (vocals, whistles, flugelhorn, trumpet); Lyle Mays (piano, keyboards); Steve Rodby (acoustic & electric basses); Paul Wertico (drums); Luis Conte (percussion).
Additional personnel: Dave Samuels (cymbals); Sammy Merendino (drum programming).
Principally recorded at The Hit Factory, New York, New York in 1994.
WE LIVE HERE won a 1996 Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Jazz Performance.
The Pat Metheny Group have always been on the move. Previous album titles such as THE ROAD TO YOU, OFFRAMP and LETTER FROM HOME indicate a proclivity for motion, and on their latest production, WE LIVE HERE, they show that their home is a constant state of travel. Throughout these nine songs they challenge the listener to not go with them.
The Pat Metheny/Lyle Mays composition team works with hooky structures which provide foundations for thoughtful, and, at times, passionate improvisations. The rousing riff behind "Stranger In Town" serves as a jumping-off point for one of Pat's many stunning solos. With a full, warm sound, he masterfully develops his improvisations as if he were telling tales, weaving lines through carefully fabricated collages of harmonic color. Thematic and motivic development are standard in Metheny's playing, and he expresses his ideas with such conviction and craft that you may find yourself humming them later.
Another highlight of WE LIVE HERE is the propelling percussion of Luis Conte. From the hip-hoppish groove of "Here To Stay" to the fierce, tribal soundscape supporting the title track, Conte always adds the right juice to the mix.
The Pat Metheny Group are at home when they are playing with fire--sometimes smoldering, sometimes blazing, but always burning.

A fantastic lost set -- some of the most interesting early 60s work by both of the players! The group's co-led by Kenny Dorham and Jackie McLean -- with rhythm backing by Walter Bishop Jr on piano, Leroy Vinnegar on bass, and Art Taylor on drums -- a trans-continental trio of players who really make for a lot of fire in the date! The quintet play a fiercely modernist approach to hardbop -- somewhat like McLean's studio albums from the time, but even a bit more unbridled, thanks to the live setting of the album -- which was recorded at the Jazz Workshop in San Francisco. Titles include "Us", "San Francisco Beat", "Lover Man", and "No Two People".

Composer and pianist Horace Silver was one of the leading lights of the post-bop movement, and LIVE AT NEWPORT '58 captures him in his prime. Leading a crack quintet (which includes trumpeter Louis Smith and saxophonist Junior Cook) through four slinking, swinging tunes, Silver turns in a wonderful set.
The set opens with "Tippin'," a hard swinger, then segues to "The Outlaw," a composition in the classic Silver mode, incorporating exotic rhythms, complex melodic leads, and deep grooves. "Senor Blues," a cool-toned blues, and "Cool Eyes," a frenetic bop workout, are equally impressive. The tunes are extended, and feature plenty of top-flight improvisation from the musicians, making for a memorable live date worth picking up.

Album notes
--------------
The late Bill Evans was among the truly great pianists in the jazz pantheon. Evans's measured, introspective approach interwove classical and blues influences, was cerebral as well as deeply poignant, proving an influence on, among others, Miles Davis, Keith Jarrett, and Brazilian-born jazz pianist Eliane Elias. What makes SOMETHING FOR YOU an event is the presence of bassist Marc Johnson, whose nimble, lithe playing was part of the last edition of the Bill Evans Trio; Joey Baron, who can wail with Bill Frisell and John Zorn, but is dynamically delicate here; and Elias's moderately dusky vocals gracing nearly a third of the album. Elias shares Evans's concept of graceful conciseness, never playing a barrage of notes when a few judiciously placed ones will do just fine.

From "Noir" Liner Notes by Dan Morgenstern :
----------------
There are moments in an artist's career when things come together in a special way, and Noir is such a moment for Anat Cohen. From the time I first encountered this remarkable musician in 200l I've been delighted and amazed at every hearing, live or recorded, in the many and varied settings that display her gifts. Anat is nothing if not multifaceted, and this fine album presents almost all these facets in the aggregate. (Almost-- since no record, no matter how great, can do full justice to a living, breathing, ever-developing creative multi-instrumentalist who will continue to surprise us.)
It brings together two main streams in Anat's musical world, big band jazz and Brazilian music, and it is also a reunion with an old friend, Oded Lev-Ari, who here comes into view as an arranger of great skill and originality. Together in high school in Tel Aviv, they both had classical training--she on clarinet, he on piano--and both discovered jazz about the same time... / read more /

For Book Of Velocities, solo pianist Jon Balke has recorded a highly unusual set of improvisations, which at times sounds quite unlike anything else in the instrument's established vocabulary. The Norwegian musician approached these pieces by recording a number of takes based around an initial, spontaneous idea, meaning that the music here is an odd, semi-improv compromise.
Clearly Balke's policy of allowing off-the-cuff ideas to develop and hone themselves has paid off: you'll hear some very odd, very beautiful passages that sound quite alien, presumably as a result of a few subtle preparations being made to the instrument. 'Chapter I: Scintilla' is especially intriguing, sounding like the rhythmically unstable pinging of raindrops on sheet metal. Taking an entirely different slant on piano improv narrartives is a piece like 'Chapter III: Obsidian', which is a virtuoso tirade of notes and ominous, swirling harmonics. Balke's fingers fire off fractured, high speed phrases with a real intuition for sophisticated melodic development and dramatic denouement, only for the pace to dissolve into the sonorous bass dabblings of 'Chapter III: Sunday Shapes', another venture into piano preparation and the kind of freakish overtones that come about from that sort of experimentation.

Album Description
-------------
Second album by widely-praised Norwegian/American guitarist Jacob Young, Sideways features the working band first heard on 'Evening Falls', a group established to reflect the compatible styles and ideas of three generations of Norwegian jazz players, the age range of the band stretching from 28 (prize-winning trumpeter Mathias Eick) to 64 (veteran drumming genius Jon Christensen). For the group Young writes songs "with a lot of room for melodic interplay and improvisation".
Born in Lillehammer in 1970, Jacob Young was introduced to jazz by his American father and at 12 he took up the guitar. After Oslo University, he received a scholarship to the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music in Manhattan. In New York he studied with Jim Hall and John Abercrombie. Back in Norway he issued three albums for local labels with supporting musicians including Nils Petter Molvær, Trygve Seim, Arve Henriksen, Christian Wallumrød, and Jarle Vespestad - names familiar to ECM listeners. Producer Manfred Eicher first heard him play live with Trygve Seim's group at Oslo's Bla Club in the late 1990s. On Sideways Young plays acoustic guitar on the title track and on "Near South End", "Hanna's Lament" and "Maybe We Can". The closing piece, "Gazing At Stars", features Jacob on both his steel-string acoustic and on classical guitar.
Vidar Johansen, who previously played in Oslo 13 under Jon Balke's direction, was a mainstay of the Norwegian jamming scene in the 70s. Jon Christensen - "a European institution of modern drumming, a master of music, probably the most influential musician of his generation" says Young - has been an ECM recording artist since 1970. Mathias Eick has become one of the new `stars' of Norwegian music since Evening Falls. Bassist Mats Eilertsen has worked since 1996 with Jacob Young who describes him as "one of the most wonderful musicians to have emerged in Norway in recent years".

This early solo effort (made available on CD by Messidor) by trumpeter Arturo Sandoval was recorded in Madrid, Spain a few years before his defection from Cuba. Sandoval really lets loose on the six selections (five originals plus "A Night In Tunisia"), showing off his tremendous technique and his ability to play rapid lines. The high-powered music (which also features pianist Hilario Duran and guitarist Jorge Chicoy) may turn some listeners off due to its ferocity and lack of space, but one cannot help but be impressed by Sandoval's talents. ~ Scott Yanow, All Music Guide

Editorial Reviews:
------------------
McCoy Tyner's work with the John Coltrane Quartet is well documented, and this CD marks a welcome return to that format. Recorded live at Yoshi's in Oakland, CA, over New Year's, Joe Lovano does the honors in the tenor sax chair, while bassist Christian McBride and drummer Jeff "Tain" Watts hold the rhythm section together with honor, passion, and drive. The world-class bassist and drummer, usually known for their overt showmanship and over the top chops, show remarkable restraint and sensitivity throughout. Tyner and friends play several of his original compositions, well-known and revered over the years. Lovano sounds, eerily enough, like Pharoah Sanders, employing a slightly staggered expansive vibrato on "Walk Spirit, Talk Spirit," while using a more haunting stance à la Coltrane for "Mellow Minor," a new modern mainstream tune. Sounding more like himself, Lovano and the group join a loping desert caravan for the beautiful "Sama Layuca," with Lovano playing the part originally written for flute. They rip through "Passion Dance" and melt abject militarism during the poignant ballad "Search for Peace." Tyner, in character, utilizes a minimalist palette to extrapolate on improvisationally during his solos. After reported health problems, it is good to hear he is sounding quite inspired and energetic during the entire date. The happy song "Blues on the Corner" further cements his upbeat demeanor, while the finale/solo standard "For All We Know" is truly the real McCoy, replete with the many flourishes, dynamism, and harmonic colorations that distinguish him from all others. In many ways this is a remarkable date, a well-paced program with all the pieces (save "For All We Know") timed at around ten minutes, proof positive that Tyner's game is still very much on, and hovering at a very high level. --Michael G. ----------------
Inception was conceived by McCoy as a sort of introduction to his debut on records as a leader. It's a blues in C minor, and in addition to McCoy's crisp inventiveness, there is - as throughout the album - the brilliantly resourceful drumming of Elvin Jones, John Coltrane's regular drummer. "I don't know anyone," says McCoy, "who plays like Elvin. He has so much freedom. He swings deeply but, unlike many other drummers, he doesn't lay on the beat so heavily that it inhibits you. And because of his freedom, he makes me freer so that I can improvise my own rhythmic patterns, knowing that he'll always be able to complement them. And then there are his enormous skill and emotional drive. Playing with Elvin spoils you for other drummers."

Release Notes:
--------------
Bill Evans has been one of the most influential pianists—if not
one of the most influential musicians—in the history of modern
jazz. Everybody who likes piano music enjoys listening to Bill’s
playing, and that is why he is so big today, more than 25 years
after he died in 1980. When in 1956 he joined the quartet of the
acclaimed clarinetist Tony Scott, Bill’s playing caused much talk
among musicians and big things were predicted for him. “When I
started out, I worked very simply, but I always knew what I was
doing,” said Evans of that time. In these early recordings as a
sideman, Bill Evans demonstrates, with apparent effortlessness and
without straining for gimmicks, what a strong and intelligent
improviser he already was in those early years.

Editorial Reviews:
------------------
McCoy Tyner's two-fisted approach to the piano is so full and expansive that he almost sounds like a one-man jazz orchestra by himself. So it's no surprise, really, that he's turned out to be such an excellent big-band leader. The seven brasses, four reeds, and one percussionist who supplement Tyner's regular trio on Journey seem to take their cue from his dense, rhythmic attack on the keyboard. The harmonies are tightly packed, with the horns clustered at close intervals; the aggressive rhythm, as likely to reflect Latin influences as swing, is reinforced as much by the horns as by the piano, bass, and drums. --Geoffrey Himes

Jackie McLean - It's Time! (1964)
MP3 / 320kbps / Covers + Scans / RS.com: 106mb
Allmusic.com:
Recorded in 1964, Jackie McLean's It's Time was only available on CD in the United States as part of a four-disc Mosaic set of his complete Blue Note recordings between 1964-1966. The band here includes trumpeter Charles Tolliver, pianist Herbie Hancock, bassist Cecil McBee, and drummer Roy Haynes. The music was written entirely by either Tolliver or McLean and walks the line between modal post-bop and free jazz. It came hot on the heels of McLean's first forays into these waters on 1963's One Step Beyond and Destination Out!. There is more to it than that, of course; chordal improvisation still plays a large part in the music on this fine record. Hancock's solo on the opening "Cancellation" is the most angular thing here, and the tempo is simply breathtaking. McLean's butt funky "Das' Dat," which follows, owes a debt to Horace Silver to be sure, but the blues element, which is in the tune's head, is pure Jackie McLean. McLean's own playing isn't particularly adventurous, though he pushes his tone to the limits at times. He swings tough with the hard bop sensibility that put him on the label in the first place, and "Das' Dat" is the most enjoyable thing here. The knotty head in the title cut is killer, with Tolliver and McLean going head to head and charging out of the gate, and the blues return in "'Snuff" by McLean. Here again is a complex, winding head for the horns in call-and-response with Hancock -- lean, spirited and full of crackling energy. Tolliver's solo in the cut is his best on the disc. Given that this has been issued as part of Blue Note's Connoisseur Series, it's a limited edition that won't be available for long. Just get it.
Allaboutjazz.com:
Jackie McLean, one of jazz's most painful losses this past year (2006), had an unmistakable sound: a slightly-sharp-of-center intonation, percussive phrasing and a boundless, thoughtful energy to lift you up out of any depressive state. These are two CDs of a period when he was at the height of his powers, previously issued on the Mosaic box set, but until now out of print.
It's Time (1964) opens with "Cancellation", a quintessential McLean piece, though written by trumpeter Charles Tolliver: quick popping rhythms with drum fills (from Roy Haynes) that lead into gutsy, extroverted modal improvisations emphasizing contextual interaction between all the musicians as McLean, pianist Herbie Hancock and Haynes throw rhythmic ideas back and forth with great speed and skill. "Das' Dat" - a pretty straight blues in Bb - enters as if to remind listeners from where McLean's music comes. Hancock's solo and comping on this are revealing; he plays right inside the tune, with only the slightest references to the more exploratory playing elsewhere on the recording. In fact, Hancock's work is riveting throughout (interesting in that his playing on Miles Davis' E.S.P. and Plugged Nickel are a year in the future from It's Time!). Tolliver's "Revillot" (his name backwards) is another launching pad for great improvisations. Bassist Cecil McBee solos briefly on the title track - his only solo on this recording, though he helps drive the entire session (bass players are the unsung hero of a burning session like this one).
Consequence (1965) opens with Lee Morgan's attractive "Bluesanova". Morgan solos first and demonstrates why he is still (though he died in 1972) a trumpet player that all jazz improvisers can learn from. Pianist Harold Mabern, bassist Herbie Lewis and drummer Billy Higgins groove strongly here and through the whole session. The title track (a McLean original) is a smoker from beginning to end with powerful solos from the leader, Morgan, Mabern and trades with Higgins. "My Old Flame", an old tune that has been covered by a lot of musicians including Benny Goodman, Charlie Parker, Peggy Lee and Miles, stands out here as a CD highlight with McLean playing the 'A sections' and Morgan playing the melody on the bridge working in an older mode of operation for an older tune. McLean solos for one complete form, Mabern takes two (stunning) 'A sections' and Morgan solos over the bridge with the rhythm section playing slightly stacatto quarter notes behind him before McLean takes it out on the last 'A section'. McLean's "Tolypso" has, as one might imagine, a calypso feel which Harold Mabern plays with real authority (and why not? He played with jazz-calypso master Sonny Rollins).
It's Time! and Consequence are two McLean CDs that demonstrate why he will be so missed.
